Find out more about our work on innovation, entrepreneurship, and SMEs in the Baltic Sea Region.

It all started with a handshake, when our Chairman Dr. Jürgen Hogeforster set out for his trip around the Baltic Sea Region in the early 1990s to attract partners to his newest project. With the Hanseatic League of the Middle Ages in mind, he wanted to re-establish the close cooperation between the countries of the BSR that once prevailed. While the Hanseatic League was a commercial confederation and operated on a much wider geographical scale, the Hanseatic-Parliament has limited its focus to the BSR and support of SMEs. Nevertheless, what has remained of the old idea is the close cooperation with guilds and chambers of commerce, industry, and crafts, and most importantly the aspiration to foster a common Hanseatic identity beyond national borders.

Two decades later, much has happened. The Hanseatic-Parliament was registered as an association in 2004, its headquarters, once located in Copenhagen, moved to Hamburg, and the Baltic Sea Academy, as a sister organization to the Hanseatic-Parliament, was founded in 2010.

However, what has not changed is, that 99% of all businesses in Europe are SMEs and hence build the economic and social backbone of our region. These companies are the key drivers for economic growth, innovation, employment, and social integration. In a Europe that seems to be growing ever more apart, what is needed, is a strong support for these businesses, acknowledging the shared challenges, common goals, and the benefit of learning from each other.

Therefore, the Hanseatic-Parliament’s mission is still valid today. As a central hub within our network, we act as a think tank for our members. We discuss and work on local challenges with our partners on an international scale, while the solutions are implemented again on the local level. This loop back to the local level is crucial to us, as we believe that there are no universal solutions. Blueprints can be used as a guide but always must be adapted to local specifics and characteristics. In line with this approach the Hanseatic-Parliament aims to develop the Baltic Sea Region into a strong and innovative region of world standing, and strengthen its sub-regions and their diversity.
